Gambling addiction or compulsive gambling has become an increasingly common problem as casinos have proliferated and online Internet gambling has become popular. Although Internet gambling is illegal in the United States, offshore entities exploit the openness of the Internet. Problem gamblers chase the high of winning by gambling repeatedly even when they have depleted their finances. They may borrow money, destroy a family’s savings by depleting college funds or retirement nest eggs, or even embezzle or steal to support their gambling addiction. They mistakenly believe that the big win is coming soon, and occasional wins feed this obsession.

Make no mistake about it. Overcoming a gambling addiction is tough work. If it were as simple as just walking away from the casinos, slots, sports betting, track or card games, there’d be a lot fewer problem and compulsive gamblers in the U.S. – and around the world, for that matter.
