family addiction

Family addiction refers to the fact that addiction tends to impact all members of the family, even if only one person is actually abusing drugs or alcohol. As the addict progresses in their addiction they develop ways to manipulate family members so as to ensure they can continue their addiction. This leads to compartmentalization, where each family member is limited in their knowledge of the overall problem. Intervention was developed as a way to bring all the family members together to share their experiences so as to break the pattern of manipulation and selective deception by the addict. Family members often become involved in treatment and will find strong support in programs such as Al-Anon.
