Denial is commonly used to describe the attitude of both the addicted person and family members who do not acknowledge an addiction exists. The addict’s denial may take the form of blaming others for their alcohol or drug abuse, or blaming an event or situation that they claim causes them to drink. Family members may minimize the drinking and drug abuse or write it off as just having some fun or blowing off steam. Generally as addiction progresses and more negative consequences ensue it becomes more difficult to deny there is a problem.
